I'm Not You
I'm amazed at how little I really know people I've "known" for years. It isn't right or wrong, but it does seem true. There is just a lot I don't share and a lot I don't know about you.

I could walk for miles and miles
In your shoes
Read your books, drive your car
Pay your union dues

I’m never going to know
What’s inside your head
What runs through your mind
Late at night in your bed
Feelings that grab you
Deep in your heart
What makes you stop
Why do you start?
I’m not you

I’d love to sit for hours and listen
As the night grows pale
While you tell me your secrets,
Your dreams, your fears, your life tale
But I’m never going to know
What’s inside your head
Why you love what you love
And dread what you dread
The feeling pounding deep in your heart
Joy lifting you up, pain tearing you apart
I’m not you

No matter how well I know you
How much we care
How deeply I love you
How much we share
We can carry this talking
Feeling thing only so far
I’m who I am
You’re who you are
I’m not you

I could open your mail
Read the letters from your mom
Have dinner with your sister
Play catch with your kids on the lawn

But I’m never going to know
What’s inside your head
What runs through your mind
Late at night in your bed
The feelings that grab you
Deep in your heart
What makes you stop
Why do you start?
I’m not you
No I’m not you
